Another Level Tutors SEND Consultancy is provided by our founder, Alan Cottington.
First of all I would like to thank you for your interest in SEND Consultancy and Advocacy. Please do read on to find out more about my background, experience, philosophy and the service I offer.
I have worked in the education sector since I completed my PGCE (with Qualified Teacher Status) in 2005 at London Southbank University. The following 17 years saw me take up teaching posts at 3 schools in Kingston, Hounslow and Surrey. During this time I also held positions as Year Group Leader, Key Stage Leader and as interim SENDCo for two years.
My passion for championing pupils with additional needs has grown from both my professional experience and my personal journey. As a class teacher and tutor, I have supported children with a wide range of needs, including:
- Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
- ADHD
- Hearing Impairment
- Dyslexia and Dyscalculia
- Global Developmental Delay
- Anxiety and Depression
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD)
- Eating Disorders/Self-Harm
The time I spent as a SENDCo in a two-form entry primary school gave me valuable insight into the complexities of SEND processes and the huge amounts of stress many families went through in order to secure support for their neurodiverse children, provision planning, and effective collaboration between schools, families, and external professionals.
My experience of SEND extends beyond the classroom. As the parent of an adopted son with multiple additional needs, I understand the emotional complexity of raising a neurodivergent child — from playground challenges to the reality of navigating systems that don’t always feel built for your family.
I know how overwhelming it can be to advocate for appropriate support, especially when dealing with the EHCP process, assessments, and communication with schools or local authorities.
Because I have lived and worked on both sides of the SEND system, I am uniquely placed to guide families through processes that can feel confusing or stressful.
I offer SEND consultancy and advocacy services at competitive rates, including support with:
- Understanding SEND processes and provision
- EHCP applications, support plans, and annual reviews
- Communicating effectively with schools and local authorities
- Interpreting reports and professional recommendations
- Advocating for reasonable adjustments and appropriate support
My approach is honest, supportive, and focused on empowering parents to feel confident, informed, and heard. I believe in working with schools collaboratively as the vast majority of teachers, SENDCo's and even most Headteachers care devoutly for the children in their care and want to see them happy and successful.
